Effective July 1, 2010, the Fairview Township Sewer Authority will adjust the sanitary sewer rate for all its customers 5.365% or by $6.00 per quarter per EDU (Equivalent Domestic Unit). The sewer charge will adjust up from $112.00 to $118.00 per quarter, or by $2.00 per month, per EDU. The residential customers' annual cost for sanitary sewer will increase from $448.00 to $472.00 or $24.00 per year. The annual increase for commercial and industrial customers will vary depending upon their number of EDUs, which is determined by their annual water consumption. The Sewer Authority is a metropolitan user of the Erie Treatment Plant, and has to pay a share of the improvements made to the plant, in addition to treatment and transporting charges to the City of Erie. In 2009 the Erie Sewer Authority issued a $15,000,000 bond to cover capital projects at the Erie Treatment Plant in which the Sewer Authority has to participate. The Sewer Authority however did not adjust the sewer rate in 2009. Transporting charges are also paid to Millcreek Township for sewage transported from the sewered areas of Fairview Township. State subsidies towards relief of treatment plant expenses unfortunately no longer exist. These costs cannot be absorbed, along with other increasing operating costs, such as electric power costs to operate the 12 sewage pumping stations without the need for placing into effect this rate adjustment to the sewer bill for 2010. The Sewer Authority will continue to operate with fiscal responsibility on behalf of the sewer customers in Fairview Township.
